Since the first time I had a Norwegian waffle, I've wanted a Norwegian waffle iron. They're heart shaped waffles! Since I finally bought one last week, I decided to try to see what else I could make in my waffle iron other than waffles.
One can make many things in a waffle iron other than waffles, apparently. Hash browns are something I'm looking forward to try. Quesadillas are easy peasy. And then there's french toast-- similar to a waffle. Personally, I prefer french toast to waffles, but I do kinda miss the little ridges. With waffled french toast, you get the best of both worlds! For a more nutritionally packed french toast, I used a protein-rich bread that they sell here in Norway at Coop, called "Super Bread." Of course, the nutrient values of what you make will heavily depend on what type of bread and ingredients you use. I also topped it with Sukrin Gold syrup instead of normal maple syrup. It has a much lower calorie count, is sugar-free, and contains a ton of fiber! Enjoy it with some fresh fruit, or traditional waffle ingredients here in Norway like sour cream, jam, and brown cheese.
Preheat waffle iron.
If you are making a batch of 6 or more, one at a time:
I recommend you preheat the oven to about 125-150 degrees celsius (250-300 degrees fahrenheit) to keep the french toast crisp and warm while you are making the rest.
Blend together eggs, milk, and spices in a medium bowl.
When the iron is sufficiently heated, spray the waffle iron with anti-stick spray. Close to disperse the spray, and open a second later.
Dip bread into the mixture, submerging or flipping it. Do not soak it by letting it sit for an extended period of time unless the bread is naturally very dense.
Place the bread in the waffle iron and close. Follow the waffle iron instructions for cooking.
Repeat. If using the oven keep-warm method, place them in the oven, one at a time, until the last piece is ready to serve.
Serve with your preferred toppings.
